Design, by all ?
7th european conference on design support.
The first day will be devoted to « grassroots initiatives », in other words initiatives that seek to getting end users participating in the improvement of their environment and the design of products and services.
There are numerous cases in the field of urban planning and architecture, who demonstrate in a convincing manner that initiatives led by end-users can result in effective and economically sound solutions, that respond to environmental and societal challenges.
« Living labs », driven by regional economical and political stakeholders are also aiming at associating potential users to the specification phase of future services that could be implemented.
This first day will highlight different cases, and will aim at discussing the extent to which such initiatives could be included in design support actions and policies. The tools and methods developed, the possibility to transfer them to other contexts, the relations between the stakeholders and the associated governance will be discussed.
The second day will focus on the impact of the crisis on the design strategy of businesses. In most cases, the first reaction has been to freeze or reduce budgets. But we will look for another perspective: are the economical crisis and the environmental imperative a call for a systemic transformation ? Are there businesses that have started to develop a new approach to innovation, or write down new challenges for their design strategy ? Are designers able to take on these challenges ? Are there new approaches to managing design ?
The topic will be approached from a business perspective, with representative of companies that have participated in the first editions of the Design Management Europe Award (2007 to 2009).
The closing of the conference will offer an update of the consultation initiated by the european commission and an opportunity to discuss future developments of a european design policy.
